Hockey tryouts are your chance to impress. From your first introduction to every shift on the ice, your effort, attitude, and play will set you apart. Follow this guide to make a lasting impression, compete hard, and prove you belong at the next level!
1. Introducing Yourself
- Reach out via email or text a week before camp saying who you are, why you are interested in the team, and providing some basic info that gets you on their radar.
- At the camp, introduce yourself to the coaches and staff to leave a lasting impression.
2. Showcase Your Strengths
- Don’t be something you’re not! Play your game!
- Showcase who you are, whether you make big hits, score goals, or make plays, do what you’re good at will get you noticed.
3. Compete Hard
- If you compete hard and give that extra effort every shift, you will definitely be noticed by coaches and staff.
- Skate hard, make sure you backcheck, and maintain high energy levels throughout games.
- Engage fully in puck battles along the boards, in corners, and in front of the net. Fight for possession and don’t shy away from contact.
4. Make An Impact
- Make it a point to make something happen every shift as this will increase your odds of getting noticed by coaches/staff.
- Take an extra shot, make a hit in the corner, block a shot, etc. Whatever it is, do something each shift!
5. Be A Good Teammate
- A bad attitude is the quickest way to get scratched off a coach’s list! Make sure you are a great teammate who puts the team first and respects your teammates!
- This is especially true during setbacks or bad plays, coaches will watch closely to see how you will react.
BONUS: Ask For Honest Feedback
- Go ask coaches for feedback throughout or after the event and really listen to them as it will help you in the long run.
- Most coaches will give you honest & specific feedback if you choose to approach them.
