One of Hockey’s Toughest Decisions

Every hockey player eventually faces the same question: stay and fight for your spot, or ask for a trade? When frustration builds, moving on can feel like the right answer. But before making that decision, it’s important to take a step back and look at the full picture. Before making that move, there are a few key things every player should think about.

Trade Or Stay?

At some point in the season, almost every hockey player asks themselves this question.

Ice time drops, your role changes, or things simply are not going the way you expected.

When frustration builds, the idea of requesting a trade can start to feel like the best solution.

But leaving a team is a major decision that can impact your development and reputation.

Before asking to move, it is important to slow down and evaluate the situation properly.

What’s The Problem?

The first step is understanding what is actually causing the frustration.

Sometimes the issue is not hockey related at all.

Billet situations, school stress, homesickness, or mental health struggles can heavily influence how players feel about their team.

Those challenges should be addressed directly instead of assuming a new team will fix them.

There are usually coaches, advisors, teammates, and family members who can help you work through these situations.

One Game Or Pattern?

If the concern is ice time, the next question is whether it is temporary or becoming a pattern.

Every player experiences games where their minutes drop or their role changes.

Coaches constantly adjust lines, experiment with matchups, and manage performance within the roster.

One reduced game or weekend does not automatically mean the coach has lost trust.

Before reacting emotionally, take a step back and look at the bigger trend.

Evaluate Yourself

If the reduced role continues, honest self evaluation becomes critical.

Look closely at your recent performances and identify areas that might need improvement.

Turnovers, missed assignments, or inconsistent effort can quickly impact how much a coach trusts you.

Watching game film or reviewing shifts can reveal details players often miss during games.

Improving small habits can often restore the opportunity you feel you lost.

Talk To Your Coaches

If you still do not have clear answers, communication with the coaching staff becomes important.

A good first step is speaking with an assistant coach rather than immediately approaching the head coach.

Assistant coaches are often more approachable and can provide honest feedback about what the staff is seeing.

Ask what areas you need to improve in order to earn more trust and more ice time.

Approaching the conversation with maturity shows coaches that you are willing to grow.

What To Consider

If you apply the feedback, continue putting in the work, and nothing changes over time, it may be time for a deeper conversation.

Meet with the coaching staff and discuss your role and future with the team.

If expectations remain unclear or opportunities never improve, the situation may simply not be the right fit.

Sometimes a different environment allows a player to grow and contribute more effectively.

A trade should only be considered after honest effort and communication have taken place.

Make It Smart

Requesting a trade should never be an emotional reaction.

Moving teams always carries risk because the new situation may not be better.

Before pursuing a move, research potential teams and where you might realistically fit.

Speak with advisors, parents, or trusted mentors who understand the hockey landscape.

When handled professionally, most coaches will work with players who want to find the right opportunity.

Check out
