Frustrated?! How To Get More Responses From Coaches! 👀

Are you struggling to get coaches to respond back to you by email or text? Is it leaving you frustrated where you’re not really getting any traction or any leads to go to camps or get signed? Luckily, from experience, we’re here to cover the tips and tricks to get more responses from coaches and increase the odds of you actually signing with a team! Enjoy!

Keep Your Messages Short

  • Coaches receive many messages from players reaching out about opportunities, so keep them concise.
  • Be objective and to the point.
  • Coaches don’t want to read novels.
  • Include necessary information, such as your name, birth year, position/shot, and current team/league.

Personalize Your Message

  • Briefly mention in your message, along with your necessary information, something specific about the coach’s program.
  • Mention a playoff run or a recent big win that shows genuine interest in their program.
  • The extra effort will take a bit more of your time, but will get you more responses from coaches.

Only Necessary Info

  • In text messages, limit details to your name, birth year, position/shot, and current team/league.
  • Emails can have slightly longer formats with more info, such as your highlight video link, elite prospects link, type of player you are, and grades.
  • If coaches are interested, they’ll definitely ask for more info, don’t overwhelm them.

Include a Highlight Video

  • When sending an email, include a highlight video that showcases your talents.
  • This allows coaches to easily view your skills without doing any research.
  • The point of the highlight video is to catch the coach’s attention to prompt them to do more research on you.
  • The first 30 seconds of the video are crucial, make sure you put your best clips that showcase the type of player you are at the beginning.

Use Multiple Communication Methods

  • Usually, start with sending an email.
  • If you don’t hear anything in 4-5 days, follow-up with another email or text.
  • Following the text/email, if still no response for 2-3 days, follow-up with another text.
  • Last ditch effort is to make a phone call. If no answer, leave a voicemail.
  • Typically 60-70% of coaches respond within this sequence, but if not, it’s ok, move on.

Stay Organized

  • Since you may be contacting lots of coaches, it’s absolutely key to keep track of the coaches you’ve reached out to and their responses.
  • Have a system in place to monitor all your contacts and communications.
  • Use Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, a notebook, or sticky notes to record everything.

Invest In Yourself

  • BE THE BEST! The better your skills and performance, the more interest you’ll generate from coaches.
  • Invest in your development by practicing regularly, focusing on specific skills, taking feedback, and performing well. This will help you standout at games!
  • Standout at every event you go to and consistently have strong seasons.

To get better responses from coaches, keep your messages concise and personalized, including essential information and a highlight video of your skills. Stay organized in tracking communications and follow up regularly while focusing on your development to stand out as a player.
