When it comes to hockey showcases, not all are created equal. With so many options out there, it’s easy to fall into a trap — from sketchy organizers to overcrowded rosters, some showcases do more harm than good. Before you invest your time and money, here are 5 major red flags to help you spot the ones worth skipping.

1. Sketchy Organizers

  • Some events are complete scams — they take your money and vanish.
  • Events may cancel last minute without refunds.
  • Check how professional their website and communication look.
  • Look up the organizer’s online reputation and past history.
  • Ask other players, coaches, or advisors if they’ve heard of or attended it.

2. Disorganized

  • Sloppy websites can reflect sloppy events.
  • No clear schedule or chaotic logistics = red flag.
  • Communication is vague or slow.
  • Ask around about past attendees’ experience.
  • Poor organization shows a lack of professionalism and planning.

3. Lack Of Exposure

  • Check if they list specific coaches and teams.
  • General promises like “tons of scouts” without names? Be skeptical.
  • Some events lie about scout attendance — verify.
  • Ask coaches if they’ve heard of the event or plan to attend.
  • Use past testimonials and word of mouth for real feedback.

4. Huge Events

  • Events with 1000+ players make it hard to get noticed.
  • Scouts can’t watch everyone — you might not even be seen.
  • You’re just a number in a crowd.
  • Smaller events (under 250 players) = better exposure.
  • Focus on events where you can actually stand out.

5. Overloaded Teams

  • Watch out for rosters with 5+ lines, 8 D, 4 goalies.
  • Less ice time means fewer chances to be scouted.
  • Ask the organizer how many players per team.
  • Aim for 3 lines, 6 D, 2 G max per team.
  • More reps = more opportunity to impress.
